High End The Holy Show

The author is a community member of the Not An Audiophile YouTube Channel. The Comment was made on the Vienna High End 2026 -Day 2 video. We enjoyed it so much we have permission to share it. Enjoy.

Once every year, the faithful arise,

with sacred brochures and glittering eyes.

Backpacks loaded, wallets prepared,

off to the audio temple, profoundly impaired.

The show begins, the halls are packed,

with million-dollar systems neatly stacked.

The prices are stunning, the faces sincere,

and everyone whispers:

“Have you heard that one over here?”

The Platinum Supreme is the talk of the town,

with chassis and cables worth buying a crown.

Does it sound better?

Nobody knows.

But it's carved from moon rock,

or so the brochure shows.

🤣

In the next room stands The Reference.

The last one was Reference.

The one before?

Reference too.

And the one before that?

Well... Reference, who knew?

Same old story, different paint,

different slogan, different saint.

MK II, MK III, Signature Gold,

the same old miracle endlessly sold.

A designer explains with a serious face:

“We've enhanced the holographic space.”

“The midrange now breathes two percent freer.”

I wonder:

“Does that make my beer any cheaper?”

🤣

Then comes the sermon, bold and proud:

“Now music sounds even more absolute!”

I sit there quietly, scratching my head:

“Was it relative before instead?”

The speakers are huge like a family home,

the cables as thick as a fireman's hose.

The amplifier weighs more than my car,

but somehow still claims to reveal who you are.

🤣

Every room repeats the same refrain:

“More air!”

“More depth!”

“More space!”

“Less grain!”

And after forty years of hearing that song,

I think:

“Boys, this marketing train's getting long.”

Then comes the greatest revelation:

“Our revolutionary innovation!”

There I sit with my vintage ears,

still running the same hardware after sixty years.

Did I miss an update?

Ear 2.0?

Ear Pro Max Ultra Quantum Edition perhaps?

With integrated nano-resolution

and optional premium gaps?

🤣

Because strangely enough, music remains

exactly the same through all these campaigns.

The notes are familiar,

the melodies too.

Only the brochures grow thicker

and the promises new.

There they stand,

the Knights of Sound.

Golden ears and microphones,

searching for the Holy Grail all year round.

And somewhere in the back,

an old Hi-Fi man sits.

Quietly smiling.

Not because he's rich.

Not because he's right.

But because he finally quit.

He was a hunter once.

Bought and sold.

Chased every miracle

the magazines told.

Spent a fortune.

Paid his dues.

Collected wisdom

along with reviews.

Now he's home.

The tubes glow red.

The Copland is warming.

No hotel bed.

The Mutec blinks softly.

The Qutest winks blue.

And outside no taxi waits.

Just a bicycle or two.

🚲

He puts on his favorite record.

Leans back in his chair.

While the show talks revolution,

he simply listens there.

And that's the punchline,

the joke in the end:

The greatest High End

isn't the system you defend.

It's not the one worth half a million.

Not the one crowned “Best in Show.”

It's the one that makes you forget

you're listening to Hi-Fi at all.

🎶

And somewhere in Vienna,

a salesman proudly declares:

“A new Reference!”

And somewhere in the North,

an old Hi-Fi man replies:

“Turn it down, son.

The music's already playing.”
